It may be the web browser was hacked when it hit a malicious site. I was told in a state security seminar to avoid the "save the password for this site" option and not to "log in automatically".
Busting the browser might also explain how they got the person's address, as that would tend to be in browser cache ("fill in fields automatically?") which I still tend to allow myself.
