When I was using Linux years ago, I had a Diamond Supra external modem that also worked well (9-pin serial connection). Basically, if it's external and you can find in it's documentation that it has a 16550 UART chip in it: you'll be good to go.
I still have my Supra. And, heh, I'm not selling it. Winmodems are the scourge of Linux. These modems are not true modems in that they don't have the real chips, they expect the software to do the functions. They're called winmodems because the drivers are only available for Windows. That being said, their were some models that were reverse engineered and have linux support. 2. US Robotics external 56K modems are the bomb with Linux. Linux loves them and they love linux.
