I can't watch it. My mother-in-law was a hoarder although probably not nearly as bad as the ones on the show . If you walked into her basement it was like a maze. Old newspapers back to the 1960s in stacks. I actually found one with the Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon surface on the front page and another with JFK speaking as President (needless to say, I hoarded them). As many times as their basement flooded we're lucky that garbage didn't spontaneously combust. We found that we had to go through everything carefully when we started cleaning the house out because she used to hide money. We found 20's, 50's and 100's hidden in books, between newspapers, and everywhere you can imagine. We found upwards of $5000. We think we probably gave away that much before we knew to start looking.
I don't know what causes people to get to that point, but it can be gross. I think in my mother-in-law's case it was due to being raised in an orphanage during the end of the depression. You got what you could and hid it safely away. When they got to a point in life where she could buy things, she just kept the same philosophy. "It's mine and I'm not letting go".
