We have large APC Symmetra units in our two main server rooms. They use
intelligent management cards that are connected to the network and can
communicate with clients installed on servers to initiate remote shutdowns.

Subject: [tech-geeks] UPS suggestions

We're looking to consolidate our UPS units in two of our main server racks.
Currently, we have 6 APC SU1000RM2U units spread across both racks. We're
hoping to get it down to one UPS in each rack. We've traditionally stuck with
APC, but I'm open to other suggestions. One of the main hang-ups I'm seeing is
having enough interfaces to "communicate" with all of the servers that are on
that unit in the event of a power failure that lasts long enough to cause the
servers to be shut down gracefully. I know I can find an APC unit big enough
to handle the load, but most everything I'm finding only has one serial
interface.

Thanks,
