Following up on myself :) I tried another build and it failed the same way. `sync' has been broken for me for some time, so I was unable to convince the kernel to dump core.
I then tried the same thing on my old kernel and it succeeded. Based on this limited testing, your kernel does appear to have introduced a bug to LFS. Eduardo
