No, or at least, I doubt it because NetBSD's implementation doesn't work that way. Shell 1: $ mknod p p $ (sleep 10; cat) < p Shell 2 (run a second or two after starting the last command above) $ echo foo > p My experience is that the echo will complete fast, finishing multiple seconds before the cat even starts.
