WMV stands for Windows Media Video -- developed and controlled by
Microsoft. WMV is a generic name of Microsoft's video encoding
solutions and doesn't necessarily define the technology what it uses
-- since version 7 (WMV7) Microsoft has used its own flavour of MPEG-4
video encoding technology (not very surprising, it's not compatible
with other MPEG-4 technologies..). DivX video format is originally
based on hacked WMV codec.
Thats about the WMV format.
Now, for the .DAT format , i made some testing with it.
See, The .DAT extension can be used as an universal extension for
DATA files.
The data can be of any sort such as video , sound or anything!
In the case of VCDs, the .DAT files contain MPG streams, that is,
Video information.
You can just rename the .DAT files in VCDs into .MPG and play it with
any media player.
Remember, DAT extension is not supported by Winamp, but it support MPG.
Anyway, DAT format used in the conext of digital video is MPG format only.
I hope you are clear with my explanation.
And , dont forget to put suitable subjects for your mails!
