you will have to do some research here.. a lot of
"professional" equipment already have built-in
interfaces (iLink, FireWire, or even old RS-232).  As
another respondent noted, you can get PC based "IR
Xmitters" which are designed to do this (you can even
get them for your PDA - search for NEVO)
automatically.

Actually, NEVO came with my old Ipaq 3950... and I use
it for most of my home theatre equipment.

Depends on what you mean by "central control"... if
all you want is power on/off, you can just use X-10.

So... as "starting points", you need to research your
equipment for its built-in functionality; study IR
linking hardware; and look at X-10 "Home Automation"
extensions for Home Theatres.
