Hi, If u take most of the CD-Drives (except plextor), they will be mentioning 52x, 48x as read and write speed.   U would have seen  writers writing at 52x in less than 3 min for 650 MB CD. But if u try to copy the same CD again, it won't read the full CD in 3 min. It takes minimum 8 min to 12 min to copy the full contents of the CD.   Its b'coz of the tech called , CAV and CLV.    CAV (Constant Angular Velocity). This uses a constant disc rotation speed, so the data transfer rate will vary from the outer tracks to the inner tracks.  So, Outer tracks read at max speed and inner tracks at low speed, b'coz the track length is less in inner tracks.    CLV (Constant Linear Velocity). This system adjusts the rotation speed of the disk to maintain a constant data rate.   If ur CD-Drive supports CAV only, it will take more time to Read. If ur CD-Drive supports CLV, it takes less time to read.   And  Writers will mostly have CLV for writing and CAV for Reading. And new writers are supporting CLV tech for both Reading And Writing.   So, check for these specification while buying CD-Drive, DVD-Drive, CD-Writer, DVD-Writer, and Combo Drives.
