There is an interesting commentary on dataloss which I stumbled across after reading some of the author's posts on Slashdot, and engaging him in an email conversation. Interested readers may find it here:
http://www.platypus.ro/content/entry.php?2001/December/04b Some comments: The author correctly points out that Freenet does not retain data permenantly, but goes on to claim that we (specifically Oskar and I) mislead people as to this fact. He also accuses me of bombarding him with emails in an effort to intimidate him into silence. I have made our (rather heated) email conversation available at http://www.octayne.com/tambreet.txt for anyone who would like to decide whether this claim is accurate for themselves. In the end he asked me to end the debate, which I did by adding him to my procmail filter. Either way, I hope this might spark some discussion around whether we are in-fact misrepresenting any of Freenet's qualities, so that if our methods of explaining the project are lacking in some way, we can address the problem.
