Just wanted to update those of you who that don't spend all day hanging out on #freenet (ie. those of you with lives) as to progress on the TestNet. If you would like to join the testnet, read this:
http://wiki.freenetproject.org/FreenetAlphatestNodeInstallation For those of you not aware of it, this is a "transparent" network of nodes running the new 0.7 code, where nodes report their status to a centralized script. Not very anonymous (nor is it trying to be), but very useful for testing. Sleon has put together some really cool visualization stuff for the network which you can see for yourselves by reading this page and following the link: http://wiki.freenetproject.org/FreenetTestNetVisualisation/. At the time of writing there are 25 nodes in the test network. One of the most useful parts of the visualization is a histogram of the link connection lengths. Some may recall that the goal is for the probably of the existence of a connection to be proportional to 1/ D where D is the length of the connection (ie. the difference between the node's locations). The effectiveness of Oskar's location swapping algorithm can be measured by how well the network conforms to this pattern. As you can see from the attached image, right now it is performing extremely well, even on such a small network. As Matthew is now working on SSKs, it won't be long before all key features are implemented, then the focus will shift to polishing up the user interface so that people can actually use the software.
