Jason,
When I wrote the following two clauses:
>The current security model in public elections is based on security through
>obscurity and the principle of confinement; we play in one (private) sand
>box and it's the best one. Trust me.
I was referring to the current security model. The word "we" in the phrase
"we
play" also referrs to the current situation. "We" represents the legacy
vendors
who tell everyone that their private sandbox (ie their proprietary voting
system)
is secure and accurate and it's the best one out there. You can't see our
source
code but trust me, it's really secure and accurate.
The "we" does *NOT* referr to Safevote. As I wrote in the email:
>...one of Safevote's security principles is based on diversity and
comparison...
>diverse systems running the same open source election software should
compare
>results and they should be the same.
Safevote absolutely, positively does NOT support security through obscurity.
Hope this clarifies the matter. I'll be more careful with pronoun usage in
the
future. :-)
And Thomas, many thanks for the excellent "Cliff Notes" on free/open source
software.
One sees mention of these terms in the mainstream press more and more these
days,
but what's missing there is a level of detail essential to understanding
what
these terms are really referring to. The links are also very helpful. Thanks
again.
