that makes a LOT of sense, it avoids the write speed and wear issues, and is fairly trivial to implement safely (while trying to power the drives long enough to write to them is not practical)

It appears I was somewhat mistaken - the NVRAM on the card is only used
for long-term storage. The unit still has a BBU but its only purpose is
to keep the card alive for long enough to stage the cache from DRAM to
the flash chips.
