Funny, this is the opposite of my experience.  Mdadm, if anything,
is not 'twitchy' enough for use with consumer-grade disk.  it sits
there retrying forever.  (for that matter, the hardware RAID I've
tried does the same thing.   "enterprise grade" sata solves the
issue with both, at a cost.)
