Hi LOPSA,
Thank you everyone for your replies both on and off list.
Based off a number of recommendations I have gone off and ordered 'The Visible
Ops Handbook',
which should hopefully keep me focused on establishing one good set of systems
at a time. I have
nmap-ed the current network, and have a slightly clearer picture now. I'm doing
my best to
work around those in the Operations Team who are obstructionist, it may be
easier to deal
with them later once my own area is fixed up.
Surprisingly there has been a bit of interest from non-techs in relation to
putting data into
Sharepoint, so it appears as though some do see the point of a central
repository of information.
One of the more tricky things I am having to deal with is the fulfillment of
management
requests involving IT functions directly related to Sales. I don't want to
entrench myself
further into a bad systems architecture so that is even harder to transition
key parts to something else.
Another is that Windows systems seem to be far less amenable to an elegant
configuration
management system. Key parts of the network require certain Microsoft
technologies, so
I intend to move much more of the backend core functionality over Linux
systems, with
Windows systems acting more like a 'shell'.
Regards,
Ben S
