I've also (in the past) been pretty happy with Crashplan. I was using the personal version (free), letting multiple machines backup to one of my own servers, though it's also possible to use Crashplan's storage backend too. It's also possible to let multiple people backup to each other, so one thing I had considered was to let family members backup their data to my server, versus their either a) no backups (most common), b) flash drive/external hard drive/dvd-rw, or c) something else like carbonite/etc. Each Crashplan client encrypts the data before sending it, so privacy isn't a big issue. I still use the personal version with family- one onsite CP destination, 2 offsite, where I seeded an external drive at home, and attached it at their homes to avoid shoving gigs and gigs through my DSL connection. I set them and a couple of others to back up to me, so I have some ability to know they're being backed up. I hate to see the majority of the pictures of my 3 young cousins get lost- again. We all know someone(s) that need some handholding in getting backups doneā¦. hosting their CP is a nice way to help them out. -- Steve Yuroff Network and System Administrator Hiebing [email protected] 608.256.6357
