You could also use something like CFEngine, Puppet or Chef. I don't
know about Chef, but I have seen mailing list activity about using at
least CFEngine and Puppet for workstation management. I know both
CFEngine and Puppet have at least some support for windows.

The nice thing about BigFix is that it ties in to the vendor patch release notification, and BigFix creates and/or bundles the fixes for you so that it becomes very close to a fire-and-forget patch management system, complete with all the nice reporting stuff that audit types like.
