Thanks for the reply! Sadly, this doesn't answer the question (at least I don't see the answer) "What device is the root/boot volume?" The assumption is that the script is dropped into a system with no predefined knowledge of the system other than "it's running" I can locate all the disks and devices and I can identify the swap devices or files but not the primary item, the root/boot volume. I can even differentiate between an actual volume and a LVM element. (I have that feeling I get when I lose my glasses and go scouring the house only to find them on my nose.) It may very well be that there's no "clean" way to do it but I have to make the effort to not miss something stupid.
