jack presents a reasonable summary of things.

i still believe there is a "bug/feature" with how linux reports swap usage.
i was looking at one on the weekend where it claimed 7GB of swap use,
and the total VM of all running processes was significantly less than this.

nevertheless, i have my answer; thanks for all the comments.
