fog is a library that abstracts provisioning & management of hosted resources, DNS among other things. 1) their website lists[¹] the DNS providers they support. I guess all of these providers have a decent API. 2) basing what you are planning to do on such a library might make sense, as it would allow you to seamlessly switch from one provider to another in the future.
