John, I think it was entirely appropriate, as a post and a thread. I am an employee of a private not-for-profit that used to be a "state" university. I had a long history of dealing with the vendors who bought corporate gear and then sold it to poor schools. I am blissfully out of the hardware side of the shop, but horse trading for hardware is a well-respected part of sysadmin work in many shops. Allan West
