Colleague of mine has something like 6 monitors connected to his laptop, and 
although there is lag, since he's using it just to blow up a bunch of 
spreadsheets, it seems to work for him.

The Dell USB3/USB-C video box can drive up to 3 external monitors. I just drive 
one big 36" curved monitor, but it works well. It's also going to depend upon 
the video capabilities of your particular laptop.

(You need USB-C support in the laptop to make this work properly).

The box, when I got it earlier this year, was a bit over $100.
