Oops... I am just compiling a list still and heard that nginx did TCP
level load balancing. I will take that off my list.

LDAP != HTTP
I don't think that HTTP servers (e.g., apache, nginx) software load
balancers are going to help you here.
We use hardware load balancers (Netscalers) in front of our LDAP
servers, but if you want a software solution, I'd suggest looking at
the built-in caching/proxy features of OpenLDAP which can be used to
load-balance the back-end traffic to your servers.
