Uhhh...  I'm surprised by that question.  "man dd" should answer that one.
Dd is a simple block level io tool, and not ideal for your purposes.  It
eliminates any intelligence from failing you (that is, tools which read ntfs
and stuff and neglect some piddly little detail that they didn't think
windows would care about.)

Dd allows you to copy all bytes of your hard drive or partition, and restore
them exactly the same.  So it's impossible for anything to go wrong as long
as you have the same hardware.  The downside is, it does every byte
including unused space.
