I found it pretty easy to build ruby and puppet for solaris. I suspect
this isn't going to be a big deal.

I've been using puppet a lot these last 6 months, and I'm not sure I can
wholly recommend it. It has it's own language, which is a little weird
in places, and doesn't always feel wholly baked. Writing good puppet
code requires I be a software engineer, not a sysadmin. This may or may
not work for you.

There's a bunch of other open source configuration management
tools. Different tools have different models -- some work by describing
and end state, and others a collection of steps. Some have a "gold
master" server, where others have a config language. Generally speaking,
I would not recommend cfengine.

When I was last looking, I found lots of reasonable comparisons on the
internet.

seems like a reasonable overview, though it lacks any negatives.

Good luck
