Here is my take on it:

The bad guys have the job of finding any exploit, and exploiting it, in
order to rob you, or rob somebody else on your behalf.

The good guys have the job of finding every possible thing any bad guy could
possibly ever do, and prevent it, and convince people to voluntarily pay for
this service.

The good guys' job is fundamentally more difficult, and they have less
resources and motiviation. Last I knew, credit fraud was a $30 B industry,
and antivirus/antimalware was $3 B.

I frequently encounter people (not my users) who got infected by something,
despite having current updates and antimalware and all the security software
running. I generally don't try to fix it, but when I do, I frequently
discover that the bad guys are more clever about digging their hooks in than
the good guys are about cleaning it out. So as soon as you get the system
clean, it just comes right back in again through some secret channel...

When the good guys are losing ... Yes, work with them, but don't count on
them.

I use Avast or AVG antivirus because it generally stays out of the way and
does its job. I use the windows firewall. And I use prevention.

Acronis True Image. Nightly complete system snapshots. If ever you have a
hint of a virus or something bad in your system, don't even think about
trying to clean it. Just nuke the whole system. It's fast, it's reliable,
and it's super easy after you figured it out for the first time.

And cheaper than buying all the other security software anyway. Plus it
solves two problems at once. Antimalware, and Backups.
