Most of these gadgets need some kind of kick to tell them "I'm done using the vapid Windows install disk you provide, now please do what I bought you for". And they of course change their USB device class and ID when kicked.
Try doing "eject cd1" and see if it re-attaches as umsm. If it does, odds are the DEV_UMASS4 quirk will make it work.
