yes, it's a trade off. sacrificing clarity for neatness. but ftp's synopsis currently looks so bad i thought it was broken when i first looked at it. however my diff is not future proof i.e. further additions will ressurect the problem. for that reason i'm ok with leaving as-is. but i still prefer my proposal to what's there now. jmc
