Hello, I've installed OpenBSD/i386 5.3 on a Dell PowerEdge R210, but extracting ports.tar.gz seems unordinary slow (the same thing applies for src.tar.gz and sys.tar.gz).
Without softdep: # mount /dev/sd0a on / type ffs (local, noatime) /dev/sd0j on /home type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) /dev/sd0d on /tmp type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) /dev/sd0f on /usr type ffs (local, noatime, nodev) /dev/sd0g on /usr/local type ffs (local, noatime, nodev) /dev/sd0i on /usr/obj type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) /dev/sd0h on /usr/src type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) /dev/sd0e on /var type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) /dev/sd0k on /var/www type ffs (local, noatime, nodev, nosuid) # cd /home # ftp ftp://ftp.fr.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.3/ports.tar.gz # ls -lh ports.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 20.5M Mar 12 22:28 ports.tar.gz # time tar xzphf ports.tar.gz 7m11.55s real 0m2.82s user 0m11.08s system Then, after enabling softdep on all FFS partitions: # cd /home # rm -rf ports ; sync # time tar xzphf ports.tar.gz 12m36.53s real 0m2.52s user 0m8.78s system Of course, this server's purpose is not to untar ports.tar.gz every day, but 12 minutes looks symptomatic. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the recent softdep issues [1] which would then be fixed for 5.4, or if it's more of a hard-drive issue. It's a new hard drive, so maybe some important setting isn't set?
