i now suspect this problem is related to the vesa driver. the graphics
don't work on this system (bug reports and attempts by jsg@ to fix it
are in the archives), so i have been using vesa, and that was fine enough.
now though...

so, how-to-repeat it, switch to an X session *using the vesa driver*...
