Well, that definitely settles the matter. POSIX will definitely require erroring out when both -n and -c are given (according to the text "Accepted as Marked"). Clearly, we must not gratuitiously differ. It is not a big surprise that POSIX decided that way given that POSIX also requires erroring out for tail -c -n. So, the latest diff jca@ sent which silently ignores the error is still not ok. It must be changed to error out. Yours, Ingo
