floppies was a huge thing, if it hasn't been a huge problem for bsd source
code in the last 30+ years, I hardly think it would be worth changing the
filenames now.

Windows will just have to grow up and get into this millennium. It's a
paid-for product, so you can take it up with your support representative.
The list of "forbidden" names for that OS is quite long and even if NTFS in
itself allows them, windows does not.

You can't ask all operating systems to adapt to the sum of limitations of
all the surrounding operating systems, the list of useful things left if
you do will be rather small.
