Hi Everyone! I have a new DAB+ radio and its one of the “Pure” DAB+ radios, the Pure One Elite Series II and here are my initial impressions of the radio. Before I go any further I should stress that DAB and DAB+ radios are only of interest to those living outside the U.S., the rest of the world is adopting either DRM, DAB or DAB+ as a medium for the digital transmission of radio and the U.S. is using HD or IBOC instead, trust the U.S. to be different <smile>. There’s very little to complain about when it comes to the Pure One Elite radio, controls are grouped together in what appears to be to be a very sensible layout, 9 well spaced round buttons are grouped in a letter U shape around a jog-dial, these buttons allow instant access to most functions of the radio so in that way I suppose one can say that this set is certainly more accessible for those without vision than other DAB+ sets you may come across. For example, a press of the “Volume” button sets the jog dial for volume adjustment, turn clockwise to increase and anti clockwise to decrease. Setting up of the radio is straight forward but a read of the "Getting Started" section of the manual is probably worth the while before you connect the radio as it explains the setup procedure. When the radio is first connected to AC power an introductory screen appears asking you to select a language, English is the default here so a simple press of the jog dial will select this. The Radio then proceeds to scan the DAB/DAB+ bands for stations, the scan takes about 2 minutes. After the scan is competed you’re free to enjoy the wonders of Digital Radio. What’s so wonderful about Digital Radio? The sound quality is obvious when you listen to this set, one of the best sounding big portable sets I’ve heard, perhaps the Roberts Ecologic 4 has an edge here but the Pure One Elite is far louder than the Roberts and doesn’t distort on high volume. So now down to one of the impressive features of the Pure One Elite radio and this is something in my view which sells the radio on its own, the Pure One Elite has a totally accessible “Review” function. Didn’t quite hear the last news story or missed those vitally important lotto numbers? Press the “Review” button on the Pure One Elite radio and then use the jog dial to rewind or fast forward through the audio, the radio is always “Recording” audio as its being played so its always available to “Review”, you can also use the mode to pause the programme whilst you take a phone call for instance and resume the programme from where you left off “Time Shifting”. Whilst these functions are common to users of Digital Radio it’s the first time I’ve seen such functions easily accessed and used on a portable radio of this type. The radio has an alarm function, I’ve not set this up yet but if the manual is any guide I shouldn’t have too much difficulty here, again the “Alarm” function is entered by the simple press of the dedicated “Alarm” button so no need to go through a main menu to get to that function. The Clock of the radio is set automatically using data provided by DAB/DAB+ or FM-RDS services so the time setting shouldn’t be a concern though if the clock fails to set then the user can set the clock manually. Like most portable radio sets these days the Pure One Elite has an input jack for an iPod or music player, you can switch to this by the use of the “Source” button which also toggles between the FM band and DAB. Given that this radio is a portable type its fitting that one can use 6 C cell batteries in the unit as well as running the unit on AC power. You can also fit the optional rechargeable battery pack available from Pure to the set, I bought one of these which I promtly tested. A full charge gave me around 32 hours of listening, the manual rates battery life up to 40 hours and I suspect this measurement applies to the use of Alkaline batteries rather than the rechargeable pack, stilll a good result and I’m well pleased. The Pure One Elite is the second Pure DAB radio I’ve purchased and I’m not disappointed. I also own the Pure One Mini which is a stand-out performer, small and mono yes but excellent sound and features.
