If it was already set up to do so, this would be a
wonderful idea, but probably a bit more than you want on your
plate for now . Basically the
radio gear must be connected to a computer running control
software that handles both the audio in and out plus the ability
to tune and adjust the reception and transmission parameters.
It's a real job for even experts.

One other possibility that might be even easier to set
up is for Gordon to join echolink. This is a computer
application that allows radio amateurs all over the world to
access VHF and UHF repeaters over the internet.

Gordon and I have actually mentioned echolink so he
knows of its existence. It works kind of like skype and uses
voice over IP or VOIP.

I don't know if it still works, but we have had an
echolink node right here in Stillwater.

A registered echolink user in Teesside, for example,
could get on his or her computer and access the Stillwater,
Oklahoma node and talk to people through the repeater. Those
people would be using their amateur radio gear and would hear
this British person using his G0 call on the repeater. The
British person would hear our responses just as if he was right
here.

You have to register with echolink to prove you are
properly licensed and I think it costs probably the equivalent
of a Pound or two, but that's the only expense.

I don't belong to echolink but I have listened to our
echolink node and could talk on the repeater since I am
licensed.

Anyway, there is echolink software for the Mac, Windows,
of course, and the iPhone. When you are talking on a repeater
system in some part of the globe, you press the Shift or some
other key, to talk and let up to listen and that controls the
radio transmitter in the far location.

Please tell us how things work out.
