I just talked with a coworker who is a new radio amateur and does belong to echolink. Our Stillwater node is down but may rise again some day and it only costs you money to join if you use a credit card to validate your registration. Otherwise, it is free. You provide a copy of your amateur radio license as proof. It's on their web site.
