Hi all

Recently, Lynne and I had a remote play around with Dane Trethowan's Fritz! Box
router. i have to say that I was very impressed by the interface. It's HTML,
and seems fully accessible.

Unfortunately, our Apple Time Capsule has now decided that its working life
should come to an end. Therefore, I began the search for a replacement. The
Fritz! Box caught my attention because of the fat that it's two USB ports allow
the addition of as much backup media as you care to install, which suits me
fine. The Apple Time Capsule was not my first choice right from the start when
it's hard drive showed signs of failure. To be honest, the Apple Time Capsule
is slow, way too devoid of configuration options and its price tag was a little
too high for me to be comfortable with.

The Fritz! Box which we are getting is the big brother of Dane's, I believe.
This one has capability of handling up to 5 VOIP connections, and I believe
it's possible to use is as a VOIP/PSTN PBX as well. That could be useful
actually, and I may just venture back into the world of VPN telephony now. I
gave up on it some time ago as I only had the SPA2000 adapter and although it
works, it brings problems. This Fritz! Box has 4 Giganet ports, plus
dual-band, (2.4 and 5 GHZ. The smaller model only uses 2.4 GHZ which means
potential clashes with other wireless devices such as mobile phones.

We will not be using the Fritz! Box as an ADSL router, as our Internet trunks
are SDSL and require dedicated hardware. But it's possible to disable the ADSL
modem and just use the Fritz! Box as a hub/gateway. Hopefully, I can bridge it
seamlessly into our networks. It will be interesting indeed to see whether I
can allocate different IP ranges and gateways for each port. If this router
supports that, (usually something found on high end non-domestic equipment), it
really will be a useful addition to our network family. As it is, I am quite
glad to get away from Apple's base stations to be honest. They are very
restrictive devices and, as I've already said, they introduce bottlenecks on a
bridged network.
