Okay, so now I've had time to have more of a play with the Yamaha TD500 tuner
so its time to talk about some of the facilities and functions this wonderful
sounding unit offers, there will be more notes coming up in future eMails on
this subject to the list as I've still a lot to learn regarding the workings of
this device.

The TD500 looks much like any other Hi-Fi radio tuner though perhaps its a
little heavier and a little more tugered than some, the build quality is quite
good.

The front face is a brushed alaminium with 8 buttons spread along it from left
to right, the first most left is the "Power" button and the right most knob is
the tuning knob - Although this tuner is digitally controlled it does feature a
knob to select stations, change frequency etc depending on the band or other
operating mode -.

The tuning knob is a stiff knob to turn meaning that it can't be knocked
accidentally, the knob "Clicks" as turned so with each click you know of a
change.

At the rear of the tuner you'll find a whole host of connections, analogue
audio out connections to an amplifier, Digital Optical and coxial outputs and
your antenna terminas and here's where things are very pleasing.

Unlike a lot of DAB+ devices with extra bands, the TD500 gives the user 3
different antenna connections and that's 1 for each band so this means you can
optimise each band to a certain antenna.

The antennas that come with the TD500 are adiquit but better performance can be
had by investing in well designed antenna units specific for each band, I use
the CC Tuneable Antenna with the TD500 for the AM Broadcast band rather than
the supplied loop antenna and AM sensitivity and selectivity increases ten
fold. a range of FM antennas is available from your local electronics store
and don't be discouraged if you're unable to install an outdoor FM antenna,
there are some very good indoor FM antenna designs available.

I'm yet to find a dedicated DAG+ antenna.

The TD500 is the most sensitive DAB+ unit I have here and this can be proved
easily, with other units I use I have to be very picky about the location of
the DAB antenna but with the Yamaha all I need to is mount it to a wall, I
haven't needed to spend ages of my time moving it this way and that to get a
good reception that doesn't drop out.

The tuner comes with a compact remote controller unit which I'm still learning
about so more on that subject next time.
