NBN for those who don't know stands for National Broadband Network and I now have my FTTP - Fibre To The Premises - installed.

I'm on the "Silver" pacakge meaning I get around 2.5MB down and 500KB up which isn't all that much better than I was achieving with my ADSL - 1.7MB down and 100KB up - but I was perfectly happy with my ADSL system speeds so if the NBN does just as well then I'll keep being happy, the only reason I took the NBN offer was due to the fact that all the copper landlines are being disconnected so - regretable as it is - Fibre seemed the way to go.

I'll miss the old PSTN network for a variety of reasons but the main being those times of emergency's, my NBN service has a battery backup as part of it but that can only last so long and then there's the issue of the Lead Acid battery itself which has to be replaced every 2-4 years but still better than having no phone at all.

Anyway to the Installation of the wole system which took place on Monday.

The NBN consists of 3 boxes, the utility box out the front of my house takes the cable in from the street and from there the Fibre goes into the home to the termination box where other equipment is connected.

The termination box has 4 WAN ports so it can be set to use four different accounts if you like, I'm only using one. These Wan ports use a standard Ethernet cable to connect to your computer, router or such depending on your situation, in my case I have an Ethernet cable running from my Asus RTAC3200 Wireless Router to Data Port one of the termination obx./

The termination box also contains two standard analogue phone jacks for the connection of a standard analogue phone or fax service, I'm yet to have these facilities connected but I do intend to retain my standard PSTN Phone and Fax services so all will be done in good time and I'm expecting my PSTN phone to be connected very shortly.

The third box to be installed is the Power Supply Battery Backup unit which simply supplies power to the Termination box and switches to the charged lead acid battery contained therein when the power fails.

So that's the NBN from my end and I've no complaints, well the only one I have is that the morning installation appointment I had turned into an Afternoon appointment but such things often can't be helped.
