Ah Roger that was helpful and I've been able to work out how it all works.
First you have to set the view to recent messages and Skype will tell
you if a voice message exists, press enter on that recent conversation
and you'll see the play voicemail button if you tab around a bit.
Yep, a little experimenting is required but you'l lget the hang of it
I'm sure.

The following is from their documentation and don't know how accessible it is
to achieve.
I was trying to work this out the other day and didn't resolve the issue, you
may well have greater success.
You can, apparently, use the menu to access your voice messages.
1. Go to View > Voice messages. All of your voice messages are displayed.
Messages that you haven’t listened to yet have an orange dot next to them.
2. In the list, click the voice message you wish to play. It is displayed in
the conversation window on the right.
3. Click the Play button next to the voice message to play it.

I know how to play back voicemail left on Skype for Mac, Android and IOS but I
