LG announces the V20, a phone squarely targeted at audiophiles

The phone promises 'concert-like audio', though the challenge will be getting
buyers to care in a crowded smartphone market.

LG is making the upcoming V20 official, and hopes those with finely tuned ears
will come running with cash in hand.

That’s because one of the major differentiators for the latest LG flagship is a
32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio. This is supposed to provide “concert-like audio”
and can “reduce up to 50 percent of ambient noise levels” according to the
press release.

A leak of renders also reveal a second-screen ticker display, just like on last
year’s model. On the back you’ll see a giant, dual-camera that takes up a
sizable chunk of the back side. LG is also sticking with the fingerprint sensor
on the back.

Along with the audio claims, LG previously announced the phone will run Android
Nougat.

The V20 will have a dual-camera and fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone.

In a statement announcing the upcoming smartphone, LG Electronics President
Juno Cho said “higher quality audio is simply the natural evolution of the
smartphone,” arguing that buyers are looking beyond faster processors and
bigger displays.

While those last two factors have definitely reached a peak for many, something
as specific as ultra-crisp audio may not be on everyone’s radar. LG will
officially show off the V20 on Sept. 6 at an event in San Francisco.

Why this matters: LG is trying to differentiate itself from a market that’s
saturated with high-end phones. It clearly thinks that appealing to those with
a craving for better sound is the way to go. We’ll have to see how this plays
out, as it’s difficult to imagine most mainstream buyers make a purchasing
decision on this factor or on gimmicks like a live ticker on your screen.
