pandora offer a free service

Pandora took over Rdio so you might wish to look at this and see if they have what you want.

I have two goals in mind with the subscription services I have.

Radiotunes for the sheer variety of radio channels they have, that's more a background thing for me depending on what I want to hear, just select a channel - say Classic Christmas - and that's what I'll hear, no extra intervention required on my part.

On the other hand I've made my own playlists and - for want of a better description - done my own programming with Spotify.

Its a wonderful backup to have, say you've heard a song on a radio station you've never heard before, you can look it up on Spotify and add it to your collection straight away, if the song grows on you then you might decide to buy it from iTunes or your local CD store if available.

I've programmed my Pandora with various radio channels that reflect the types of music I'm likely to want to hear, the problem with Pandora for me is that - whilst the concept is very good - the quality of the audio isn't anything special and I doubt whether Pandora are even at all interested in changing this.

I don't use any of these services, because although I do listen to music from time to time, I don't listen to it enough to make it worth 10 bucks a month. If someone had a service that was a couple bucks a month, I might use thatjust because I don't generally use online feeds all that often, (maybe 3 or 4 times a month), roughly once a week, and that's just not worth 10 bucks a month to me, especially considering there's all kinds of free stuff out there that I can pull down anytime I like. Admittedly, I don't get to choose what gets played in that case, but most of the time, when I use these services, I'm not really looking for specific stuff, just background noise. When I want specific stuff, I'll listen to my own collection. Nobody is offering a service for 2 or 3 bucks a month, and so I don't use any of them.

However, I do have to say I liked rdio, and did subscribe to that service for a month, but it just so happened I subscribed just before they went belly up, so a month is all I could have gotten out of them anyhow. Kind of sad that, as I really liked their service. When I said I wanted to hear an artist, I got that artist, and not 50 million other artists that have no relation whatsoever to the artist I wanted to hear. I don't know another service that does that. I hear some of the pay services offer artist only feeds, but they still throw in other artists from time to time, and that's just not what I'm after. When I choose to listen to a particular artist, I want just that artist, and nothing else. If I want random music, then these services are fine, but I can't see paying for a service that doesn't offer what I want.

I guess the point here is that Pandora are concentrating on quantity over quality.

I too gladly subscribe to Radiotunes, not just for the quality of streams but the excellent variety of material available.

The disdavantage of Radiotunes here is that I cannot specifically tell Radiotunes what I want to hear, I have a few hundred music channels to select from and that's that, more than enough music.

I am also a subscriber to Spotify and they opffer me - not only high quality audio streams - but the ability to hear my audio offline.

Interesting, the article shown did not talk about any increase in the quality of the streams.
I am a paid subscriber to radiotunes and they have a 320K stream.
Cheers

The more options out there for music subscription and streaming then the better I'll be pleased, I like Pandora and Spotify though I've never gotten into Apple Music, with Pandora and Spotify around I see little point? <smile>. http://www.radiotoday.com.au/news/whats-new/10170-pandora-premium-to-take-on-spotify.html
