Good afternoon or whatever it is where you are, yet again! I thought the group might be interested to know that I now have my Google Home device working. It took me a little big of fiddling around, but it now works, and I love it!
It looks, for the benefit of those who have seen one, quite similar in shape to the Echo from Amazon. Although the Google Home is considerably smaller. It stand at around 4 inches high, and is about 6 inches round, from point A and back again. The microphone in the Home is located in the top panel of the unit, and it only has one, as opposed to the Amazon Echo’s seven. It does, however, seem to be very sensitive. To put its into perspective. The audio output from the Google Home is at least as good, if not better than the audio which the Amazon Echo kicks out, and that device is most definitely no audio slouch! The “Wake Words” for the Google Home are: “Hey, Google” then you ask it your question. Unfortunately, not all of its features are currently available outside of the US. However, contrary to what I was told bye one so-called “Expert”, I do have it recognising my location and local points of interest. So that, as they say, is good enough for me for the time being. Over the course of the next couple of days I will be putting together an audio demo of both the Google Home and also the Amazon Echo. if anybody is interested in having a listen to it, let me know privately <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> and I will add you to the list of parties who I send links too. I shall also endeavour to provide an objective evaluation of each device, based on my own experience, not that of somebody else who I’ve read about! I shall tell you one thing which had disappointed me so far about both the full-size Amazon Echo and also the Google Home. That being that there is no audio/line output socket. I suppose their thinking was that this isn’t going to be used for private stuff. It’s also true to say, however, that both devices give you the option to use the very latest BlueTooth technologies in order to interface external speakers or a headset. So to be totally objective, I guess that the fact that there isn’t such an output for a traditional line device isn’t really all that important. I’m happy to answer questions, on or off list, if anybody has them. Assuming, of course, that I know the answers to the questions. If not, I’ll tell you so. ======================================== My compliments and kindest regards Gordon Smith: <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> Accessibility & Information Technology Support Specialist.
