I know what you mean about the volume problem. From similar enquiries elsewhere
there is no way to adjust volume in Recovery.

What I use is the FiiO A1 Mini Portable Headphone Amplifier for this sort of
job. Just plug the usb connection lead into your iMac to provide power to the
amplifier via the micro usb cable provided, and then connect the amplifier via
the 3.5 leads provided to your 3.5 socket on your iMac. Then turn on the
amplifier - it is the button furthest away from the headphone socket. Hold it
down for about 3 seconds to turn on. The volume up is the button closest to the
headphone socket and the volume down is alongside. Plug your earphones /
headphones into the amplifier and you are good to go.
Once the amplifier is on pressing the on off button briefly cycles through
loudness profiles. Hold down the same button to turn off.

I use several of these amplifiers with different annoyingly quiet devices.
They apparently do not work with digital radios but I have not personally tried
this.

They are pretty cheap for what they do on Amazon. I bought mine for about £20.
If the latest iMac does not have 3.5inch socket then I am afraid words like
without a paddle and creek come to mind.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: iMac recovery utility with Voiceover

Hi!

I'm currently in the middle of reinstalling Mac OS on my iMac, I've been having
an issue with Sound Forge for Mac hwich has prevented me from entering any
activation information for the application, every time I've tried to enter
information - or even run the Application I get a "Registration Error" and the
software quits so perhaps the way around this is a full and complete reinstall
of everything from the ground up bypassing the Mac Migration Wizard -.

The whole procedure will be straight forward but the main thing that's
irritating me right now is the incredibly low audio volume of Voiceover whilst
in the recovery utility so if anyone knows if its possible to raise the volume
here then I'd really like to hear about it, I suspect that I'll just have to
struggle on though.
