Hello everyone!
I mentioned my purchase of the Rotel A14 Amp last week and told you what
I knew about it upon having set hands on the amp quite some time ago so
it was on Saturday night when the actual fun began.
Actually one could say the fun began on Saturday Afternoon when I
brought what I thought to be the Rotel A14 home, certainly an A14 box
with the appropriate accessories pack but certainly note an A14
Amplifier as ordered.
I contacted the store and they promptly delivered an A14 - both box and
Amp - to me within a few hours and took away the old mistakes making as
many sincere apologies for the mixup as they could and all apologies
were accepted as I just wanted to hear this Amp in action on my own
speakers.
Many reviewers describe the Rotel A14 as an “Entry Level Amp” so if
that’s the case then I think its an incredibly good value for money
entry level amp even though one might argue that the A14 doesn’t sell
for an entry level price.
Let’s do a reality check then by saying that what you’re offered here
with this Amp would indeed have cost a lot more not all that long ago.
The sound - thanks to Digital inputs - is something that has to be
heard to fully appreciate what’s on offer here and those people who have
paid thousands for dedicated DAC units would know exactly where I’m
coming from here.
So for sound we have something that is enjoyable to listen to and if you
enjoy your music then good sound will want to make you listen long and I
don’t deny that I’m totally addicted to the sound of this Amp which I
have done and will continue to listen to for hours.
I summarised the source inputs of the A14 in my last eMail on the topic
so what else is the Rotel A14 capable of.
With your iPhone or Android device in tow - and matching 14 components
wired to the A14 through the “Rotel Link” - you have total and utter
control along with accessibility, let me explain.
Along with the connection sockets for inputs and outputs on the rear of
the A14 are some 3.5MM stereo sockets which are labeled “Rotel Link
in/out” respectively and its to these that you connect the respective
components - in m case the hotel T14 tuner which I’ve owned for just
over a year and the CD14 CD player which I bought with the Rotel A14
Amp, connect the 14 to the Internet and see what happens.
What happens is that you get a list of sources you can control from the
14 Series App.
Switch to the CD player using the App and you get a very easy to read
display that displays CD text if possible, elapsed playing time etc.
Underneath the display you find the transport buttons.
Switch to DAB and the current station is displayed along with the set
presets so double-tapping on any one of those will immediately change
the station, I’m sure you get the idea.
You can manually select one of the A14’s sources and decide which
sources you want to be displayed in the App - you may not use the
Turntable input for instance so that can be removed from the source
display -.
Adjustment of menu and tone settings is possible from the App so you can
adjust Balance, Bass, Treble or bypass the whole lot to have the Amp run
in “Flat” mode.
So that’s all for now and I’m sure I’ll be writing again on the topic of
the Rotel 14 series of components.
