Being I am a junk store scrounger, I am finding many HP Laser Jet 2, 3, & 4's at second hand, stores, hospital support (Visiting Nurses) etc, for 5.00 or less lately.
So far out of 5 I have purchased, 2 are in fine shape, and work great. I keep buying the others for parts and most of them I find have full or almost full toner cartridges in them. The LJ 2's & 3's use the same cartridge, so for my 5.00 or less, I get almost full extra cartridges, besides spare cords, cables & paper trays. Online there are many sites that list the HP Printer error codes and what they mean. There are some internet suppliers of HP parts very reasonably. As I develop my skills on repairing these units, the store can branch out into the repair of these units also.
