Bob,
I've done many of these. Only one with a CRT problem had a line down the middle. I
assume it was
internally cracked.
I replaced that and the fired up, green got real bright and shut down. I replaced the
CRT driver for the
green.
Then, the picture was severely bowed and stretched. Found DL032 leaky(70 ohms), about
the center of the
board. I have this on order, so hopefully this will fix the set. I tried for three
days to get the
convergence before I was convinced there was another problem on the deflection board.
Just finished another one with a split cap CP010, 220/400v.
I didn't see the cap until I was ready to put it together. Set came in dead but would
try to come up three
times. Per Lynn Davis with RCA, he suggests try heating or using a torch on the solder
pads of the small
signal board for the ribbon and other connectors. I tried that and this set came
on(even with that cap
split.) ESR on the cap was pretty high...about 20 ohms, so it wasn't totally opened.
You're right, not enough money on these....
BTW, doesn't RCA pay extra per CRT replaced? I haven't entered the claim yet, but I
think some
manufacturers do.

Subject: [Techs] Thomson ATC221_ITC222 Leaking CRTs

This is the second one of these I have had recently with severely leaking
CRTs (this one has both leaking blue and red). I have also seen many other
techs on the various email forums indicating the same thing which is one of
the reasons I guess the CRTs are on factory backorder since February. The
cabinet design of these sets and acesssibility make them a real sonofagun to
replace. Just the electrical convergence/geometry alignments for one CRT are
level 1 (9 ponits of alignment), level 2 (25 ponits of alignment), and level
3 (195 points of alignment). This is for EACH color in EACH mode (480p and
1080i). I feel bad for us servicer's who only get under $200 warranty labor
for this. The other issue is that I believe these new CRTs are the same as
what was originally installed in the set so I wonder how long before they
also start to leak? Have any of you had the leaking CRTs on these ATC221 /
ITC222 chassis yet? I am curious to see how prevalent this problem is!
