Joe,
On these Zeniths, always include the module number.
Also, inside the cover is a listing of similar sets and different screen sizes. 
Try searching for all
these module in the TV database.
You say the screen turned black, then you say decreased vertical sweep.
Does it do both, or just decreased vertical?
If decreased vertical, it's time to check the caps in the vertical section.

    After it played a while, I noticed it turned a "rainbow" color and
the crt turned black. I had about 6 or 8 inches of "picture" in the very
center of the set. The volume works fine. Any input would be very much
appreciated. I almost forgot...i also had a "smut" area around the main
ac line fuse, so I'm pretty sure there was some lightning around
