As a matter of personal preference, I've been very happy with the Memorex 
CD-482E drive as it is able to read re-writeable cdroms that I've burned 
with my HP cd-rom burner. They are also pretty cheap.
Additionally, I've been very happy with Fujitsu hard disks, while every 
drive I've ever seen crash has been a Western Dital and has crashed pretty 
hard.
