TODAY'S FEATURED NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT TIP

MANAGE YOUR PRINT SERVERS
by Barrie Sosinsky

It's been estimated that roughly 15% of all of the costs borne by an
IT organization are consumed by the management of print servers;
considerably smaller than the amount dedicated to file services, but
similar to what is spent managing backups. Often the costs of capital
equipment such as servers and printers are known, as are the line
items for consumables such as paper and ink, but rarely is the time
spent managing printing accounted for. This tip offers advice for
streamlining print services to save both time and money.

MANAGING PERFORMANCE WITH PERFMON
by Dave Gabel

Chances are you're not really managing your systems' performance.
With shortages of IT people, many shops just sort of let things
happen and then respond when there's a problem. Managing is better.
But how do you start? In this tip we take a look at perfmon, an
inexpensive operation that comes gratis with Windows.

SIMPLE REGISTRY EDIT IMPROVES TCP/IP PERFORMANCE
by Brien M. Posey

If your organization uses the PPPoE protocol to attach to the
Internet, then there's a good chance that your organization's
Internet connection isn't performing anywhere near as well as it
should be. You might have noticed that when you attempt to access
some Web sites that Internet Explorer tends to time out a lot. If you
dismissed this problem as low bandwidth, then you'll be happy to know
that the problem is easy to correct.

CISCO'S SWITCH THE GI JOE OF THE NETWORK | SearchNetworking.com

Whoever thought an Ethernet switch could help you reach your train on
time? Cisco's military-grade Catalyst 2955 switch is helping IT shops
take Ethernet to new, more rugged environments, including a public
transit authority that is using the appliance to keep its data, and
its commuters, moving quickly.

CISCO IOS CONFIGURATIONS IN DSL ARCHITECTURES | Cisco Press

DSL architectures are commonly used across enterprise and service
provider networks. End-to-End DSL Architectures provides a detailed
review of the history, current application, and future of DSL,
including a review of the challenges these architectures present, as
well as the obstacles to proper implementation in real network
settings. This chapter excerpt presents the configurations of the
four basic TCP/IP architectures. These include Integrated Routing and
Bridging (IRB), Routed Bridge Encapsulation (RBE), and Point-to-Point
Protocol over ATM (PPPoA). The chapter also goes on to explain
Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet.
