How do you know if your company's new/updated technologies will work
over the WAN? Usually you don't...until they're deployed in
production...when all kinds of unexpected problems arise and end-users
are screaming. Now you can predict application performance, and the
impact on the WAN, before rollout; Plan network capacity; Preempt
problems; Ensure your network's health. **GET THE WHITE PAPER HERE**

TODAY'S FEATURED NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT TIP

EXTEND YOUR WIRELESS NETWORKS
by Barrie Sosinsky

So you got a wireless network, (access point, wireless NICs, etc.)
and now you find out that not everyone can get onto the network,
because the signal strengths just aren't great enough to get through
the walls, up to the next floor, and so forth. So? Make the signals
stronger.

Here's how:

NETWORK MANAGEMENT: WHY WE NEED IT | Robert J. Shimonski

Network management is a combination of technical skills that a
technician can offer mixed with a product/application that can be
used to aid in both monitoring your infrastructure and making the
technicians life easier. The products typically work by providing a
management console that can contain multiple items to manage, or by
grouping many functions into one executable function. In sum, it
makes your life easier and makes it more manageable.

Here's a for instance:

MAKE YOUR SYSTEMS "CRUNCHY" | Robert L. Scheier

If you've been around security for the last few years, you've
probably heard the phrase "crunchy on the outside, chewy on the
inside." That means your organization is well protected with
firewalls and/or antivirus tools at the gateways where the network
meets the Internet, while the servers, storage and management
consoles on the inside are left virtually unprotected.

People have been talking about moving to more "end-to-end" security
for some time, but recently I've heard customers are actually taking
action. They're finally making the inside of their IT infrastructures
more "crunchy" because of new threats, new regulations and new
technology.

Here's a sampling of how security managers are making their systems
harder to hack on the inside, as well as the outside:

EXPERT ADVICE | Carrie Higbie on Emerging Technologies

We are please to introduce our newest site expert, Carrie Higbie.
Carrie currently works with The Siemon Company as the network
applications market manager where her responsibilities include
providing liaison services to electronic manufacturers to assure that
there is harmony between the active electronics and existing and
future cabling infrastructures. She participates with the IEEE, TIA
and various consortiums for standards acceptance and works to further
educate the end user community on the importance of a quality
infrastructure. Carrie is one of the few that chose to work with
applications and networks providing her with a full end-to-end
understanding of business critical resources through all 7 layers of
the OSI model.

There's always something new in networking. Carrie can help explain

Title: Heterogeneous networks: Leveraging more than just Windows to
lower costs, improve productivity

Speaker: Don Jones, Founding Partner, BrainCore.Net
Date: Available 24/7

Ever hear of "the right tool for the right job?" Most folks have, yet
companies are still standardizing on Windows even when it might not
be the right tool for the job. Learn about operating system
alternatives like Linux, Unix and Mac O-S-X, and how everything,
including Windows, can work and play together. Start choosing your
operating systems based on how well they fit particular jobs, and
leverage interoperability features and standardized protocols to keep
everything on the same page.

NETWORKING DECISIONS CONFERENCE | Atlanta, GA - Nov. 5-7, 2003

FEATURED SESSION: NEW FRONTIERS OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
To reduce operational costs, customers look to network and system
management systems that allow for "management by exception." These
systems not only diagnose and report on problems, but also fix
problems without requiring constant IT staff intervention. In this
session, Jean-Pierre Garbani, director, Forrester Research provides
you with the value proposition of network and systems management
systems and how they provide effective services that increase the
business productivity and improve operation staff efficiency. Plus,
as IBM, HP and Sun are bringing self healing and self provisioning
technologies to the data center, the underlying automation and
virtualization supporting grid computing will also change the way the
networking infrastructures are managed. Find out how from one of the
top speakers from last year's conference as he returns with new
insights you can't afford to miss.
